They’ve added some AI-related features recently, but the foundation is still the classic LeetCode-style format.
Strengths:

- Brand recognition means candidates are familiar with the format
- Good for high-volume screening where you need to filter thousands of applicants quickly
Weaknesses:
- Algorithm-heavy challenges don’t reflect real engineering work
- Output-only evaluation — you see the result, not the process
- AI tools are either banned or unaddressed, creating unrealistic testing conditions
- Candidates who grind practice problems outperform candidates who build real software, which is a bad signal
- The experience has a reputation problem among senior engineers who find the format demeaning
Best for: High-volume hiring pipelines that need a fast initial filter, especially for junior roles where algorithmic fundamentals are a reasonable proxy.
CodeSignal
CodeSignal has made a deliberate push beyond pure algorithm challenges. Strengths:

Best for: Companies that want something more modern than HackerRank but aren’t ready to rethink their assessment philosophy entirely. A solid middle ground.

CoderPad focuses on live technical interviews rather than asynchronous assessments. It gives interviewers and candidates a shared coding environment with execution support, drawing tools, and replay features. If your process centers on live coding rounds, CoderPad is purpose-built for that.

Weaknesses:
- Live interviews are inherently expensive: 1–2 hours of engineer time per candidate, per round

- Doesn’t solve the scalability problem — you still need humans conducting every interview

TestGorilla
TestGorilla takes a different approach entirely. It’s a multi-skill assessment platform that covers technical skills alongside cognitive ability, personality, and culture fit. Technical assessments are one piece of a broader evaluation. The platform is more generalist than the others on this list.
Strengths:

Weaknesses:

How to Choose
The right platform depends on what you’re actually trying to measure.
If you just need a high-volume filter and algorithmic ability is a reasonable proxy for the role, HackerRank and Codility will do the job. If your process is built around live interviews, CoderPad is the best tooling for that format. If you want broader skill evaluation with good analytics, CodeSignal is a strong option. If you’re hiring across functions and want one platform for everything, TestGorilla covers more ground than any engineering-specific tool.
